Now that is all well and good but it isn't always as easy as it sounds to get that extra space. Usually to do this you would need to invite 32 people and have them all sign up then download a client for their OS and sign in. This could take forever and be really frustrating.
However I believe I have managed to find the fastest way to reach the referral limit and without the need to rely other people or and using only 1 machine - usually if you use the same machine to register the invites it will invalidate your bonus :(

Steps to your free storage:

Sign up for your free Dropbox account
(skip if you already have one).
Install Ubuntu on VirtualBox on your machine. - (Follow this link if you require a walk through guide)
Open Finder and, in Finder’s menu bar, select Go Go to Folder. In the box, type the following location: /private/etc/hosts and press return. A new Finder window will open and your Mac’s hosts file will be selected. Click and drag it out of the Finder window and drop it on your desktop. Spotify desktop double app loads on mac computer. Install Dropbox on Ubuntu - Open up a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t). After the ~$ write:

When asked 'Do you want to continue' hit enter.

Go back to Virtualbox and you should still have the 'Log in to Dropbox' window open. Enter in the details of your new alternate/temporary account and click 'Next'. Do not continue with the set-up after this point, just close all of the windows and shut down Ubuntu.
You should now have an extra 500mb of space in your dropbox :)
